Call for Papers: Third Space Research Group Symposium

We are pleased to share a call for submissions to the forthcoming Third Space Research Group Symposium. See the invitation and details below. We do hope some of you will submit and/or attend this exciting, inaug symposium.

Abstracts of no more than 300 words are invited for the inaugural Online Symposium of the Higher Education Third Space Research Group (HETS), to take place via Zoom on the afternoon of Wednesday 8th November 2023.

The research group was co-founded by Dr Maeve O’Dwyer (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Malgorzata Drewniok (University of Lincoln) and PhD Candidate Rebecca Sanderson (University of Lincoln). The aim of the group is to promote collaboration, research activity and engagement across Higher Education for third space professionals, as defined by the work of Dr Celia Whitchurch. The theme of the 2023 symposium will be the challenges and opportunities faced by third space professionals in the 21st century university.

Although operating in the third space comes with many challenges, third space professionals are ‘leading-edge’ (Whitchurch 2015). ‘Staff who work in these boundary-crossing spaces as change agents and disrupters, or as guides and bridges to help staff and students manage challenges placed on modern HE, are key to success in challenging times’ (Nutt 2022: 263).

This free online symposium will mark the inaugural activity of the research group, with a keynote talk by Dr Whitchurch, and the opportunity to get to know other colleagues from across HE working in similar roles.

Abstracts are requested according to the following:

·        Submit via email to thirdspaceresearch@gmail.com

·        300-word written or a 2 minute video submission proposing your contribution

·        Deadline for abstracts Monday 25th September

·        All formats of submissions welcomed, including research papers, work in progress reports, soapbox speeches, workshop ideas, provocations, multimedia works etc.

·        Joint proposals or proposals co-presented or co-designed with students welcomed.

Abstract acceptance will be confirmed by Monday 9th October, and following the conference, eligible formats of submission will be published as conference proceedings in the University of Lincoln’s peer-reviewed pedagogical journal, IMPact.

Successful speakers will be asked to share biographical and/or social media information in order to support efforts to promote the symposium. We hope to record the symposium, but speakers may opt out for their session if preferred.

To submit an abstract, or with queries, please contact the organisers at thirdspaceresearch@gmail.com.

Yours Sincerely,

Rebecca, Gosia and Maeve.
